No. This ability is given only on special occasions AS A SIGN TO UNBELIEVERS who are around to listen.
1 Corinthians 14:21–22 “It is written in the Scriptures: “I will speak to my own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners. BUT EVEN THEN, THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord. So you see that speaking in tongues is a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not unbelievers.”
Acts 2:4–13 “And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other. But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”
- Unbelievers refuse to acknowledge any miracle even if they witness it.
There are more helpful gifts than speaking in tongues, like teaching, healing, discernment, and prophesy. Those gifts benefit the believers.
1 Corinthians 2:4–11 “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. HE ALONE DECIDES WHICH GIFT EACH PERSON SHOULD HAVE.”
“Churches” that only “speak in tongues,” but do not teach about the importance of having faith, repentance, baptisms, and God’s coming judgment are unbelieving and ignorant. Whatever they say does not come from the Holy Spirit, but from the enemy. It may as well be a curse spoken over those who come to hear it. There is an order for speaking in tongues, and the Holy Spirit would not to speak thought someone unless there was another person given ability to interpret.
Mark 8:11–12 “When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will NOT give this generation any such sign.”
