45. How to interpret “…I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” Philippians 4:13

Philippians 4:10–14
Paul’s Thanks for Their Gifts
“How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.”

Paul was saying that he could survive any circumstance, with or without people’s help, because of his unity with the Spirit of Christ, who strengthened him as He strengthens all who receive Him – it’s not human strength. Paul was doing God’s will. He trusted God to always help him.

1 Corinthians 9:17 “If I were doing this on my own initiative, I would deserve payment. But I have no choice, for GOD HAS GIVEN ME THIS SACRED TRUST.”

It’s the same for all who live in the Holy Spirit, doing God’s will – NOT their own will. They don’t freak out when their bank account shows zero, and they don’t forget God when they get more provisions.

People who still “live in the flesh” twist this verse to apply it to their selfish motives and worldly achievements.
