What are the “evil spirits in the heavenly places” mentioned in Ephesians 6:12?

Question continues: “I understand the verse, but I don’t understand what seem to be demons in heaven, which contributes to the controversial ‘Aerial toll houses’ belief. Is job 1:6 related?

Heavenly Court, and yes, Job 1:6 is exactly about that. (Similarly, 1 Kings 22:19–23)

Job 1:6 “One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them.”

I don’t subscribe to Eastern Orthodox theories. From what I quickly read about “toll houses,” it sounds like a person dies and THEN satan accuses them, but angels counter his arguments and it’s all about “how good or how bad they were?” That has nothing to do with faith. It’s a works-based religion. It’s unbiblical.

The situation in Job was happening while Job was alive on earth. Satan accused him because he wanted to tempt him and prove that he wasn’t as righteous as he appeared. But to tempt people – Satan needs God’s permission. So God gave him restricted permission.

Once a person dies, their fate is sealed. There’s nothing else that can be done after death. Faith and repentance needs to be PROVED BY ACTIONS while a person is still alive here on earth. No one can prove anything once they’re buried underground. Those who believe their “good” will out weight their “bad” have no faith in Jesus Christ and zero understanding about why He came from Heaven.

Judgment means condemnation and happens to those who don’t believe in God’s Son, continue to live in sin, and die in sin.

John 8:24 “That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins.”

Ecclesiastes 12:1-7
“Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.” Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky. Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop. Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly. Remember him BEFORE THE DOOR TO LIFE’S OPPORTUNITIES IS CLOSED and the sound of work fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint. Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him BEFORE YOU NEAR THE GRAVE, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral. Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, BEFORE THE SILVER CORD OF LIFE SNAPS AND THE GOLDEN BOWL IS BROKEN. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”

Psalm 32:6 “Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.”
